Is Mary the Mother of God?

During the late third and beginning of the fourth century the early church fathers referred to Mary as the mother of God to assert the divinity of Jesus Christ which is being questioned by many followers of Arius. As a result, the title of "Mother of God" (Theotokos, God-bearer) was bestowed upon Mary by the First Council of Ephesus, which took place in the year 431. This council was attended by a large number of western bishops, who most likely saw the benefit in utilizing this title. A resolution was issued by the Council stating that Mary is the Mother of God due to the fact that her son Jesus is one person who possesses both divine and human natures. This is a response, when the church was especially confronted with the Nestorian heresy that Jesus consists of two persons. This word lost its true meaning when the Roman Catholic institution was swayed in its perception of Mary. Instead of claiming that Jesus is one person with two natures, it highlights Mary's function in the Church as a whole. And this is unfortunate.
