Can believers pray for the dead to go to heaven?

The Bible does not teach believers to pray for the soul of a deceased person. The Roman Catholic institution based this practice of praying for the dead from the Book of Maccabees. According to the apocryphal book of II Maccabees 12:39-48, Judah's army discovered stolen idols from Jamnia hidden beneath the coats of dead Jewish fighters killed on the battlefield. This violates Jewish law. Many people believe that this is what caused their deaths. Judas, most likely the group's leader, was so moved that he sent twelve thousand drachms of silver to the temple in Jerusalem so that the priests may pray for them, breaking Jewish law. And, because the deceased soldiers are thought to be holy, they are eligible for grace. The passage concluded, "It is therefore a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be released from their sins" (2 Macc. 12:46). Obviously, this was not the practice of Jesus or the apostles. Only by faith in Jesus can you get God's seal, which is the Holy Spirit. And once you have the Holy Spirit, you are assured of heaven. The entire plan of salvation, including the Holy Spirit, is a gift from God (Eph. 2:8-9). Nobody can buy God's gift, which includes the Holy Spirit. As Peter said,“May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain the gift of God with money!” (Acts 8:20). If believers will pray for the dead to go to heaven then Jesus died for nothing.
