Abortion In The Christian’s Perspective

The word “abortion” is defined by a dictionary as “the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, most often performed during the first 28 weeks.”

A number of authorities in the medical field sugar coat this horrifying action as “termination” of the unborn child if the young mother sees this “unborn embryo” hindering their future welfare.

There are one thousand and one reasons that humans made up to substantiate abortion. They can give all the reasons in the world but they could never change the fact that abortion is in fact murdering the innocent lives of millions of babies.

In fact, abortion has murdered more innocent human lives compared to the number of killings of all the dictators of the world combined.

Many men and women around the world also try to justify abortion as “women’s choice” describing this practice simply as removal or terminating an unformed embryo. They may be unformed but they are still considered a person.

I wonder how would they call an individual who is born with unformed arms, legs, or even skull?

Is their definition of a person limited to the normal formation of the whole body?

I would say this is very subjective.

Once a sperm cell and an egg cell becomes a zygote in the first trimester then it is already considered a person not just an unformed embryo.

This is not a novelty invented by Christians but was held even in times past during the Ancient Near East. Even the Psalmist describes this unformed embryo or fully formed fetus as a human person.

“For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.” – Psalm 139:13-16

The act of abortion is murdering an innocent person who could not even defend himself. They say it’s their womb, therefore, it’s their choice.

But what about the choice of that person inside their womb?

Proponents for abortion would even justify and rationalize that pregnancy resulting from rape and incest should be aborted to spare the victim from trauma.

Is this really the answer to the problem?

Or will this wrong decision condemn the victim all the more?

I remember a testimony of a woman who claimed to have aborted five times that whenever she sees children there is guilt and condemnation felt inside of her.

Why?

This is because God created us with a conscience to know what is right and wrong. No matter how many times we justify our immoral acts using emotional, medical, and psychological excuses and reasoning the fact still remains, that aborting a baby’s life unless the mother’s life is at stake in good conscience is considered murder by the Scripture.

“Their conduct shows that what the Law commands is written in their hearts. Their consciences also show that this is true, since their thoughts sometimes accuse them and sometimes defend them.” – Romans 2:15

Let me share with you a Christian testimony.

A close family friend revealed that her doctor discovered that her baby inside her womb has a form of genetic disorder. A bit confuse, she went to another doctor hoping to hear some good news but only to found that the second doctor concurred with the first. This time her present doctor was already giving her the choice of whether to terminate (abort) or prepare herself for the baby’s physical growth delays and mild to moderate intellectual disability.

She decided to go to the United States and make her final decision there. But before she went to her final doctor, she didn’t focus on the problem but instead soak herself in worshipping the Lord early in the morning by singing. And then the final answer came when the third doctor concluded there was nothing wrong with her unborn baby.

Yes! It’s a miracle!

Whether one encounters a miracle or not, God can still turn unfortunate things around for His greater glory and honour.

Well, I’m glad that during the time of the Ancient Near East there were no abortion clinics. For if there was, then probably, Bathsheba will also contemplate of murdering this innocent human person inside her womb namely King Solomon from whom our Savior came.
